Supporting the AHF

Unlike many charities, the AHF is able to cover its administrative costs through income from interest and funding from Government agencies. This means that all the support it receives from individuals goes directly to the projects it funds, rather than on overheads. Donations to the AHF are very cost-effective: relatively small amounts can help many different projects, and the way in which the AHF recycles funds through its loans means that donations can be used over and over again. Your support can make a vital difference to projects throughout the United Kingdom.

Becoming a Friend
You can become a Friend for a donation of as little as £10, or any amount up to £999. As well as knowing that you are helping the AHF’s work, you will be sent a free copy of the Annual Review each year showing all the projects you have helped to support.

Supporters (from £1,000) and Benefactors (from £5,000) receive additional benefits such as invitations to events and building openings, publications and the opportunity to visit AHF-supported projects. A list of Friends, Supporters and Benefactors appears in the Annual Review: if you would prefer your donation to be anonymous, please let us know.

Making donations
Gift Aid: if you are a United Kingdom taxpayer, the AHF can benefit from an additional 28% in Gift Aid from your donation.

To become a Friend, please send your donation to The Architectural Heritage Fund, Alhambra House, 27-31 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0AU, or call 020 7925 0199. For further information about becoming a Supporter or Benefactor, please contact the AHF’s Chief Executive, Ian Lush.

Leaving a legacy to help the Architectural Heritage Fund

Please consider including the AHF in your will. Donations made in this way are free of tax and go directly into the AHF's endowment fund, helping projects for many years to come.

Your questions answered

What kind of legacy can I leave?
The simplest form of legacy is a residuary bequest. This is simply an instruction in your Will that The Architectural Heritage Fund should receive the residue, or part of the residue, of your estate; the amount that is left after other legacies and costs are paid. This has the advantage that any specific amounts you have left to family or friends will be unaffected.

How will it affect the tax position?
Legacies to registered charities are free of inheritance tax. This means that if the value of your estate exceeds the current tax threshold (ask your local tax office for details) your legacy could reduce inheritance tax liability.

What wording should I use in my Will?
Your solicitor or other professional adviser will help you include the correct wording in your Will. However, here is a recommendation:

I give to The Architectural Heritage Fund (registered charity number 266780) of Alhambra House, 27-31 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0AU [details of gift] to be used for its charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer of The Architectural Heritage Fund for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift
