Restoration II

If the BBC’s series Restoration has inspired you to do something about that building you know and care about but seems to have been forgotten and neglected, then The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) may be able to help you.

The original series of Restoration, shown during the summer of 2003, showcased 30 of the UK’s most important buildings at risk – buildings that through neglect, redundancy or simply an owner’s inability to care for them, have deteriorated to such a poor condition that there is no apparent economic use for them and consequently, no future. The second series continued on the same theme, featuring 21 equally important buildings from across the UK.

Once again, the buildings featured in Restoration II were extremely varied in their original purpose, ranging from an archbishop’s palace and a Scottish castle to a Welsh Workhouse and a cotton mill, but all with one thing in common – the backing of their local community and a core of dedicated and enthusiastic supporters eager to see decaying buildings brought back to life and given a sustainable new future.

Most of the groups featured in the series were in fact building preservation trusts (BPTs), charities that are established with the specific aim of preserving a historic building(s). Although the AHF’s case studies illustrate just a small percentage of the work being carried out by such groups, it is clear that BPTs have long been successful in bringing buildings back into use, socially, economically and physically enriching their local communities.

The AHF offers advice on how to establish a building preservation trust and has a range of grants and loans to help a historic building project start and progress. Most of the projects featured during the two Restoration series were started with help from the AHF and many have received AHF grant or loan assistance.

If you would like to discuss your ideas further, are interested in helping to help other people rescue historic buildings or would like more information on the work of the AHF, please contact us.
