The AHF and RegenerationWorking in partnership with charities, the private sector and national and local government agencies, the AHF has been a major contributor to urban and rural regeneration since it was founded in 1976. Many of the projects the AHF supports have a dramatic catalytic effect on the surrounding area: in West Wemyss in Fife in Scotland, for example, the refurbishment of 18 houses helped to arrest the decline of a whole village, and led directly to the re-opening of the village pub and shop. Similarly the restoration of Poplar Public Library in Tower Hamlets, London, has contributed to a wider regeneration scheme, bringing in total investment of over £2.5million; whilst the rescue of the Eagle Workshops and Exchange Buildings in Sunderland has brought in investment of over £6million and helped to create 75 new jobs in an area of multiple deprivation. Local AuthoritiesAlthough the AHF cannot fund local authorities directly, partnerships between a local authority and a charity, such as a building preservation trust, can benefit from AHF support. Many local authorities have found such a partnership to be the ideal way of dealing with their buildings at risk, helping to restore and give a new lease of life to empty or derelict properties which have been a blight on their communities. For more information about working with the AHF and building preservation trusts view the leaflet A Future from the Past or contact the AHF. |
There are many more examples of the impact of the projects the AHF has funded in the case studies on this website: see case studies for examples in your area. |
